Rajasthan Crocodile Safari Packages: Chambal River and Ranthambore

Planning a Rajasthan Crocodile Safari? There are two easy ways to do it. You can take a boat ride on the Chambal River to see gharials and mugger crocodiles in the wild. Or you can see mugger crocodiles by the lakes of Ranthambore National Park on a jeep or canter safari. Safari Tour India books the boat or safari, your hotel, a private car and sightseeing together as one Rajasthan Crocodile Safari package.

We are based in Ranthambore, Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan. Palighat, where the Chambal boats leave from, is only about 35 km from our office, so the river trip is an easy half-day.

Planning a weekend from Delhi or Jaipur, a family break from Mumbai or Bengaluru, or a longer India trip from London, New York, Dubai or Sydney? We plan it with you on WhatsApp or email and pick you up from Sawai Madhopur station, Jaipur airport or your hotel. Crocodiles and gharials are wild, so no sighting is guaranteed. Send us your dates and starting city: call or WhatsApp +91 77373 10027, or email info@safaritourindia.com.

Why go

Why Choose a Crocodile Safari in Rajasthan?

See gharials where they still survive

The gharial is critically endangered, and the National Chambal Sanctuary is one of its last real strongholds. From the boat you often see them lying on sandbanks with their long, thin snouts, along with mugger crocodiles. Sightings still depend on the day.

A calm boat ride

The Chambal ride is slow and quiet, which suits families, older travellers and anyone who'd rather not spend hours in a jeep. Life jackets are kept on the boat, and the boatman's instructions apply throughout.

Birdwatching and river photography

River terns, kingfishers and, in winter, Indian skimmers work the water and the sandbanks. Bring binoculars and a long lens, because gharials often rest on the far bank. We plan the trip around the light and your confirmed boat slot.

Easy to add to a wider trip

A Chambal ride fits neatly into a Sawai Madhopur stay, a Ranthambore tiger safari break or a Golden Triangle trip with Ranthambore. We arrange transfers and hotels around your arrival and departure.

The two options

Rajasthan Crocodile Safari Destinations

01 · Palighat, Sawai Madhopur district

Chambal River: Boat Safari from Palighat

The National Chambal Sanctuary follows the Chambal River through Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Our boat safari leaves from Palighat in Sawai Madhopur district, about 35 km from town. The drive takes around an hour, and the last few kilometres are a narrow road through fields. The boat ride itself lasts about 45 minutes to an hour.

On the water you may see gharials on the sandbanks, mugger crocodiles and plenty of river birds. Indian skimmers and other migrants are around mainly in winter. Rides run in the morning and afternoon; late afternoon is good for basking crocodiles and sunset light. There are no shops or toilets at the ghat, so carry water.

02 · Inside Ranthambore National Park

Ranthambore: Crocodiles Beside the Park Lakes

Ranthambore's lakes are home to a good number of mugger crocodiles. You often see them resting on the banks of Padam Talao, Rajbagh and Malik Talao, below Ranthambore Fort, during a regular jeep or canter safari. This is not a boat trip. Crocodile viewing is part of a land safari, and your route depends on the zone the forest department allots, so we tell you whether your zone covers the lakes when we book.

This option suits guests already planning a Ranthambore safari who want crocodiles as part of the drive, along with deer, birds and, with luck, a tiger. No sighting is guaranteed. If gharials are your main interest, pick the Chambal boat ride. If you want a park drive, choose Ranthambore, or do both.

Cost

Rajasthan Crocodile Safari Packages with Price and Itinerary

Short answer: there is no single price. A Chambal boat ride costs differently from a Ranthambore jeep or canter safari, and a safari-only booking costs less than a package with hotel and private car. Ranthambore permit fees are higher for foreign nationals. We share an itemised quote once your dates, group size and services are clear.

What changes your cost

  • Chambal boat ride or Ranthambore safari category
  • Number of travellers and whether the car is private
  • Hotel category and number of nights
  • How many activities you add
  • Your arrival point and transfer distance
  • Travel date, current permit fees and taxes

Every package comes with a day-by-day itinerary and an itemised quote.

Who it's for

Crocodile Safari Rajasthan for Families, Couples, Solo Travellers and Photographers

Families

The boat ride is a calm wildlife outing for children, as long as everyone wears a life jacket and stays seated. The landing at Palighat is rocky, so tell us if anyone needs help boarding. Bring sun protection and water.

Couples

Take a sunset ride on the Chambal and stay somewhere quiet in Sawai Madhopur, or add crocodiles to a Ranthambore safari. We arrange the car and hotel, and the itinerary shows every transfer time.

Solo travellers

We check whether the boat is shared, how seats are given out and whether there's a minimum charge. For Ranthambore, we find a shared jeep or canter seat and sort your transfer to the gate.

Wildlife photographers

Bring binoculars and a long lens, since gharials and birds are often on the far bank. Don't ask the boatman to push in close. Skip the flash, and leave drones behind unless you have official permission.

Plan by season

Best Time for a Rajasthan Crocodile Safari

Short answer: November to March is the best time. The weather is comfortable, gharials bask on the sandbanks in the winter sun, and migratory birds such as Indian skimmers are around. Summer is hot, and in the monsoon high water can stop the boats.

In summer, take an early or late slot and cover up from the sun. Low water often leaves wide sandbanks, though it changes from year to year. In the monsoon, the river runs high and Ranthambore's core zones close from July to September, so we confirm what's running before you book anything.

FAQ

Rajasthan Crocodile Safari FAQs

Can't find your answer? Call or WhatsApp +91 77373 10027.

Where can I see crocodiles on a safari in Rajasthan?

Safari Tour India arranges two options. On a Chambal River boat ride from Palighat, about 35 km from Sawai Madhopur, you may see gharials, mugger crocodiles and river birds. On a regular Ranthambore jeep or canter safari, mugger crocodiles are often seen by the park's lakes. Pick by your route and what you most want to see.

What is the difference between a gharial and a mugger crocodile?

A gharial has a very long, thin snout and eats mostly fish, and it is critically endangered. A mugger, or marsh crocodile, has a broad snout and lives in rivers, lakes and marshes. The Chambal is one of the last strongholds of the gharial, while Ranthambore's lakes have muggers.

Is a crocodile sighting guaranteed?

No. These are wild animals, and what you see depends on their behaviour, the weather, the water level and your route. Guides help you look, but no one can promise a crocodile or gharial. Late afternoon, when they bask in the sun, is often the best time to look.

How long is the Chambal boat safari?

The boat ride lasts about 45 minutes to an hour. Palighat is about 35 km from Sawai Madhopur, roughly an hour by road, so the whole outing takes around three hours with reporting and boarding. We confirm the meeting point, slot and timing before you travel.

Can I see crocodiles during a Ranthambore tiger safari?

Often, yes. Mugger crocodiles rest by Padam Talao, Rajbagh and Malik Talao below Ranthambore Fort, and you see them from a regular jeep or canter safari when your allotted zone covers these lakes. We tell you if your zone does when we book. Sightings are not guaranteed.

What is the price of a Rajasthan crocodile safari?

It depends on whether you choose a Chambal boat ride or a Ranthambore park safari, the number of travellers, a private car, your hotel category and how many activities you add. Ranthambore permit fees are higher for foreign nationals. Send us your dates and needs and we'll share an itemised quote.

What documents do I need?

Indian travellers carry the same original government ID, such as Aadhaar, that was used for the booking. International visitors book with passport details and carry the original passport. We confirm the exact documents for each activity before you pay.

Can I combine Chambal and Ranthambore in one trip?

Yes. Sawai Madhopur is the easiest base for both. We book your hotel, a Ranthambore park safari and a Chambal boat ride on a separate slot, with enough time between them for the drive and reporting. Two nights works well for both.

Are life jackets provided on the Chambal boat?

Life jackets are kept on the boats, and we ask every guest to wear one for the whole ride. The landing at Palighat is rocky, so tell us in advance if anyone in your group needs help boarding or has limited mobility.

When is the best time to visit?

November to March is the best time, with comfortable weather, gharials basking on the sandbanks and winter birds such as Indian skimmers. Summer is hot, so take an early or late slot. In the monsoon, high water can stop the boats and Ranthambore's core zones are closed.

Book Your Rajasthan Crocodile Safari

Tell us whether you'd like a Chambal boat ride, a Ranthambore park safari or both. We'll sort the bookings, hotel and transfers, and send a day-by-day itinerary with an itemised quote. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, so we plan around the experience and the confirmed schedule.

Please share: Chambal, Ranthambore or both, your travel dates, number of travellers, hotel and transfer needs, and your starting city or arrival station or airport.
