Rajasthan Bird Watching Tour Packages

Looking to spend a quiet morning with painted storks, pelicans and kingfishers? Our Rajasthan Bird Watching Tour packages take you to Keoladeo National Park in Bharatpur, one of Asia's best-known bird wetlands, and to the lakes and forest of Ranthambore. You explore Bharatpur on foot, by bicycle or in a cycle-rickshaw with a trained local guide, and Ranthambore from a jeep or canter. Safari Tour India puts the park entry, guide, hotel, private car and sightseeing together in one plan.

We are based in Ranthambore, Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan, and we time each birding trip around the season, so you visit when the birds you care about are actually around.

We plan birding trips for guests from all over India, from Delhi and Jaipur to Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai, and for travellers from the UK, Europe, the USA and Australia who want a few birding days in their holiday. Everything gets sorted on WhatsApp before you arrive, and we pick you up wherever you land, whether that's Bharatpur station, Agra or Jaipur airport. Birds keep their own schedule, so we never promise a particular species. Send us your dates on WhatsApp at +91 77373 10027, or email info@safaritourindia.com.

Plan a Birding Holiday in Rajasthan

Most people know Rajasthan for forts and tigers, but our birding guests come for its wetlands, lakes and dry forest. Winter brings migrant ducks, geese and waders to the water, while the forests hold owls, eagles and parakeets all year. We help you pick a route that matches the birds you want, the days you have and whether photography matters to you.

Already planning a wider wildlife trip? Birding fits easily alongside a Ranthambore tiger safari, a Chambal boat ride or a stay in Jaipur.

Where to go

Best Places for Bird Watching in Rajasthan

01 · Bharatpur

Keoladeo National Park, Bharatpur

Keoladeo National Park, also called Keoladeo Ghana, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Rajasthan's best-known birding destination. Its shallow marshes, woodland and grassy patches hold more than 350 recorded species. In winter, ducks, geese, pelicans and waders arrive from Central Asia and beyond. After the monsoon, a huge heronry of painted storks, openbills, egrets and cormorants nests in the trees. Sarus cranes, the tallest flying birds in the world, live here all year.

The park is closed to cars. You explore on foot, on a hired bicycle or in a cycle-rickshaw pedalled by a park-trained rickshaw puller, many of whom know their birds very well. Bharatpur is about an hour from Agra and 3.5 to 4 hours from Jaipur or Delhi. It suits beginners and serious birders alike, and its flat trails are easy for families and older travellers.

  • From Jaipur~180 km · 3.5 to 4 hrs

What we can book

  • Park entry and rickshaw guide
  • Naturalist guide on request
  • Hotel near the park gate
  • Car from Agra, Jaipur or Delhi

02 · Sawai Madhopur

Ranthambore and Sawai Madhopur

Ranthambore is famous for tigers, but its lakes, dry forest and old ruins are good for birds too. Rufous treepies often land right on the jeep, and you can look for crested serpent eagles, owls, parakeets, kingfishers, and storks and waders around Padam Talao and Rajbagh lakes.

A Ranthambore jeep or canter safari is a general wildlife drive, not a dedicated birding trip, and it follows the route of your allotted zone. If birds are your main goal, tell us before you book. We can suggest the best slot, add a quiet walk around the countryside outside the park, or pair Ranthambore with Bharatpur.

03 · Near Sawai Madhopur

Chambal River

About 35 km from Sawai Madhopur, a boat ride on the Chambal River is the best way to see Indian skimmers, which nest on the sandbanks in winter. River terns, kingfishers and waders are common, and you may also see gharials and mugger crocodiles basking on the banks. It adds a river day to a Ranthambore birding trip.

04 · Near Jaipur

Sambhar Lake

Sambhar is India's largest inland salt lake, about 80 km from Jaipur. In a good winter, when the water level is right, flamingos and other waterbirds gather in large numbers. Numbers change a lot from year to year, and parts of the lake are working salt pans, so we check conditions before you go and keep to areas where visitors are allowed. It makes an easy day trip from Jaipur.

What you may see

Birds You May See on a Rajasthan Birding Tour

Sarus crane

The world's tallest flying bird, with a red head. Pairs live at Bharatpur all year.

Pelicans, ducks and geese

Winter migrants that fill Keoladeo's marshes, usually from November to February.

Eagles and harriers

Raptors hunting over wetlands and forest, including the crested serpent eagle in Ranthambore.

Kingfishers

Pied, white-throated and common kingfishers along the water at all three wetland sites.

Indian skimmer

A river bird with an orange bill, best seen on a winter boat ride on the Chambal.

Siberian cranes used to winter at Bharatpur but have not been seen there since the early 2000s, so we don't list them as a sighting.

Plan by season

Best Time for Bird Watching in Rajasthan

Short answer: November to February is the best time for bird watching in Rajasthan. Winter migrants are at Bharatpur's wetlands and skimmers are on the Chambal. August to October is the season for Keoladeo's nesting heronry. Summer is hot, with mostly resident birds.

Bird numbers change with the monsoon rains and water levels, so a dry year can mean fewer waterbirds. Tell us what you hope to see and we'll suggest the right dates and places.

Early mornings are usually the most active time for birds and the best light for photos. Keoladeo is open from sunrise to sunset, and Ranthambore drives run at fixed morning and afternoon times. We confirm the current hours and rules for your dates.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can't find your answer? Call or WhatsApp +91 77373 10027.

Which place is best for bird watching in Rajasthan?

Keoladeo National Park in Bharatpur is the top choice. It is a UNESCO World Heritage wetland with more than 350 recorded bird species, and you explore it on foot, by bicycle or in a cycle-rickshaw. Ranthambore is good for forest birds and raptors, the Chambal River for Indian skimmers, and Sambhar Lake for flamingos in a good winter.

What is the best season for a Rajasthan birdwatching tour?

November to February is the best season. Winter migrants such as ducks, geese and pelicans are at Bharatpur, and skimmers nest on the Chambal sandbanks. August to October is the time for Keoladeo's nesting heronry of painted storks and openbills. Summer is hot and mostly has resident birds.

Can I book a private Rajasthan Bird Watching Tour?

Yes. Most of our birding trips are private, with your own car, driver and hotel plan. At Keoladeo we book a park-trained rickshaw guide, and we can arrange a specialist bird guide on request. Share your dates and group size and we confirm availability.

Are bird sightings guaranteed?

No. Birds are wild and move freely. What you see depends on the season, the weather, water levels and some luck. A good guide and an early start improve your chances, but we never promise a particular species.

How do I get to Bharatpur for birdwatching?

Bharatpur is about 55 km from Agra, roughly an hour by road, and about 180 km from Jaipur or Delhi. Bharatpur Junction has direct trains from Delhi and Mumbai. We pick you up from the station, Agra, Jaipur airport or your hotel.

Can birdwatching be combined with a Ranthambore safari?

Yes. Many guests add Ranthambore to a Bharatpur trip, or see birds on their tiger safari. A regular jeep or canter safari is a general wildlife drive, not a dedicated birding trip, so we tell you clearly which parts of your plan are focused on birds.

Do you arrange hotels and transfers?

Yes. We book hotels close to the park gates and a private car with driver for the whole route. Your final itinerary lists every service included and anything that is extra, such as entry fees or a specialist guide.

What should I bring on a birdwatching tour?

Binoculars, a camera with a long lens if you shoot, a field guide or bird app, neutral-coloured clothes, a hat, sunscreen, water and comfortable walking shoes. Winter mornings in Bharatpur can be cold and foggy, so pack a warm layer.
